Poetic Grammar and Language Lesson

Preparation:
Select a few poems from The Macaroon Moon that you feel the children may relate to, and copy
them to the chalkboard. Read a poem with your children, or have them read aloud independently.

There are many ways to use the poem for grammatical study. Choose what fits best for your
students’ grade:

1. identify and discuss how punctuation is used in the poem
2. underline parts of speech nouns/verbs/adjective in each line of the poem
3. identify rhyming words
4. identify rhyme scheme and have children write short poems of their own following the same pattern.

Recommended poems from The Macaroon Moon to use for this lesson are:

"Rhyme Time" (especially relevant)

“Sneakers”

“A Book”

“When the Chips are Down”

"Wind Race"

Also read the following five lessons using the book The Macaroon Moon
