The Macaroon Moon: About Wanda Haan

"The title poem, The Macaroon Moon, begins the book. Its message is simple,
whimsical even, but it gives the reader a glimpse into the mind of a woman
who absolutely understood elementary age children."
---from an article by Cassandra Day, Lifestyles Editor, Journal Register Newspapers

About the Author of The Macaroon Moon:
Wanda Haan graduated from Eastern Tennessee State in Johnson City and received her
Masters Degree in elementary education from Ball State. An elementary school teacher
for six years in Noblesville, Indiana, Wanda then became an award winning writer,
editor, and managing editor for Weekly Reader elementary school periodicals for 17
years. She was the author of five titles in Rand McNally's People, Spaces & Places series
and her writings for elementary school children and teachers were also published by
Pearson Education Group and Benchmark Educational Publishing.
One of the poems in The Macaroon Moon is entitled “Rhyme Time.” It concludes,

                  “Try a beat
                    with words you meet.
                    Rhyme them again and again.
                    Read it aloud
                    for one or a crowd.
You’ve learned to sing with a pen!”

Wanda wrote her own daughters when they were in elementary school,

                  “Think a book.
                    Write a book.
                    Dream one in your head.”

After Wanda died unexpectedly at 59 in 2003 from heart disease, her family was surprised
to find about 100 poems and stories written for pre-school and elementary school age
children among her papers. Her last poem was discovered on November 9, 2006 in a box
        in her garage.

The Macaroon Moon book contains 19 poems from Wanda's lost poetry
        collection for children.
