Some of the 2007 Winners of The Macaroon Moon Poetry/Book Illustration Contest:
Note that the first and second place winners wrote about
their neighbors and neighborhoods.
We think the two poems read well together.

First Place:
Psalms Doucettperry of Charlottesville, Virginia
for My Neighborhood:
My neighborhood is filled with
toys, dogs and swings
and lots of other really fun things.
I have neighbors who are
lots of fun,
not just one or two,
but everyone.
In fall, winter and spring
we gather around
to do different things.
Just come to visit
and you will see!
My neighborhood is
a good place to be.

Second Place:
Bragan Swindle of Kimberly, Alabama
for Neighbor War:
Everyday we play war
Down by the seashore
In our make-believe tanks
Made out of planks.
We fight evil men
Against King Ben
From the Universe Zen.
We always win.
That's the end.

Five Runner-Up Winners Listed in No Specific Order:

Annie Nguyen of Morris, Alabama
for Math:
I do my math
After my bath.
But I don't like to add
With my dad
Because he makes me sad,
And mad
Sometimes glad
Even bad,
Because my dad is so rad!

Sophia Sanchez-Maes of Las Cruces, New Mexico
 for Fog:
Fog is a new born cloud
That has sworn a secret of doom.
I never saw such a black night as one with fog.

Josh Bailey of Marion, Iowa
for The Tornado:
Last night, there was a tornado.
It's true, cause I said so.
It whirled and twirled
and scared us to death.
It soon went away,
but it made a big mess.

Maya Gouw of South Setauket, New York
for The King:
O' spring is here,
Love has drawn near,
And all but one is exulting.
Who it can be
It's no mystery.
For it is the king
Who needs a flight to hover aloft
So we'll buy him a ravishing song bird
That'll merrily sing.
Then we all may live a life as kings!

Robyn Krost of Valencia, California
for Carson, Sorry You Left:
Why did it have to be my cousin
to go to heaven
when he was seven?
Sorry you left, Carson.
